15-year-old Ukranian superstar Dmytro Kedyk kept his white-hot winning streak going even further Saturday, with yet another victory at the action-packed Marshall Chess Club. Dmytro's latest triumph came in the 16th Annual Super Saturday Action Grand Prix, where he took 4˝ points in the 5-round event. IM Jay Bonin, FM Ricardo D'Arruda, and Masters Boris Feldman and Yefim Treger all finished a half-point back, with 4-1. January 26. Super Sunday Game/60 Quad!
3RR, G/60. Chess Center at the Marshall Club, $$60 to 1st each quad, b/4 per quad.
Football game? What football game??
So seemed to say the 28 players who entered the Annual Super Sunday Game/60 Quads, resulting in a record turnout for this traditional supplement to the annual pigskin pandemonium. In the popular quad format, players are grouped into 4-player groups, formed according to rating, where each plays against the other three contestants. The large turnout increases the likelihood that everyone will face opponents fairly close to their own rating, avoiding the "big-fish vs. little fishie" phenomenon of the modern Swiss, where opponents may be several hundred rating points apart, particularly in the early rounds.
In the five top quads, though the ratings ranged from 2250 down to 1531, the theory worked in practice, as no player outranked his opponent by over 180 points, with the rating difference in the top quads coming down to 100 points or less. The sixth "quad" actually consisted of the 9 lowest ranked players, who all played a 3-round swiss (with 4 prizes totalling $120), due to an odd number of players at the start of the event.
The unstoppable 15-year-old Ukranian sensation Dmytro Kedyk (2250) proved true to form, winning the $60 first prize in yet another event, 2˝-˝. David Zimbeck (2133) likewise captured the $60 prize in Quad #2, also 2˝-˝. Eleven-year-old expert Robert Hess (2022) crushed the 3rd Quad, posting the day's only 3-0 sweep, en route to his $60, while Danny Goodman (1946) bested the 4th Quad 2˝-˝ for his own $60. Anthony Daniel (1596) clinched $60 for winning Quad # 5, also with 2˝ points. In the sixth group, Joshua Ginzberg (1354) and Paul Handorf (1353) each took home $45 for tying for 1st-2nd with 2˝ points, just ahead of Danny Rohde (1527) and Emily Freeman (1411) who each went home with $15.
And in the end, everyone was able to make it back in time for the kickoff to the "Other" game as well! - Steve Immitt.

Larry Price won the Under 2000 Prize, also with 2˝. In an unprecedented occurrence, 15-year-old Ukranian Wunderkinder Dmytro Kedyk did NOT finish in the Winners' Circle this time(!), after being tagged with a first-round loss to Roger Lowenstein (1700)!

The Kedyk Express was sidelined by the Kreiman Juggernaut this Thursday, when IM Boris Kreiman sacrificed the works to bring 15-year-old star Dmytro Kedyk to the brink in their exciting matchup on Board One in the last round of the February 6th edition of the America's longest-running action tournament at the historic Marshall Chess Club. Meanwhile, the Bone (IM Jay Bonin) was at it again against FM Boris Privman. The result was a two-way tie for First, 3˝-˝, with Kreiman and Boin in the Big Playoff for the free entry into the next Tuesday Master Action. Kreiman had Black, and, with draw odds in the Armaddeon Playoff format, was able to force a perpetual check to secure his victory over Jay.
Russian newcomer Mark Glukhovskiy won the Under 2200 Prize with 3 points, while Scot Mc Elheny took Under 2000 accolades with 2˝. In the "other" playoff action, David Zimbeck bested Fedor Khrapatin for the honor of representing the non-Masters in this coming Tuesday's Master Action. - Steve Immitt

Rafal Furdzik, meanwhile, took home $86 for finishing Clear Second, defeating 2 Masters and drawing with Bonin along the way. Ten-year-old Marc Arnold and 16-year-old Adam Maltese shared the $83 Under 2200 prize with 3 points, with Maltese turning in a very impressive 2530 tournament performance rating-- the highest among the 31 players-- to win the Qualifying Rights to the upcoming June 24th Masters Tournament. And nine-year-old Ben Gershenov made the most of his half-point re-entry, winning his final two games to take home the $73 Under 2000 Prize.
As the name suggests, the players may just be warming up for the upcoming annual Thursday Night Action Chess Championship on June 26th-- a 15 Grand Prix Point Action Extravaganza-- to start on the road to Philly this July 4th.

June 26 15th Annual Thursday Night Action Championship!! WGPP: 15Q New York
4-SS, G/30, Chess Center at the Marshall Club, $$1,500 b/60 paid entries, minimum half each prize guaranteed. 2 sections, Open, $$ 500-250-200, U2400/unr. $200. Under 2200, for U2200 or unr. $$ 150-100, top U2000 $100, $100 prize limit to unr.

15-year-old sensation Dmytro Kedyk put on quite a show for the chess fans at the 16th Annual Thursday Night Action Championship June 26th. Kedyk sliced through the competition like a knife through butter-- except this butter included a field of no less than three Grandmasters-- Ildar Ibragimov (2647), Pavel Blatny (2563) and Jaan Ehlvest-- who were rated an average of 300 points higher than he was! Dmytro's coup de grace was a nice attacking victory on Board One in the last round over GM Jaan Ehlvest (at 2690, "only" Number 2 on the wallchart that night!), capping off a perfect 4-0 sweep of the Open Section and the $413 first prize, the 10 Grand Prix Points AND a blistering 2818 tournament performance to boot! Fourth-ranked GM Alex Wojtkiewicz, who has also defeated 4 GMs in one sitting and turned in 2800+ performance ratings of his own when he won this event in previous years, had to settle for clear second this year, along with the 5 Grand Prix Points and $206 for scoring 3.5 (you know you're in a strong tournament when Wojtkiewicz: a.) is Number 4 on the wallchart; and b.) doesn't win the tournament himself!). Four players tied for 3rd-6th with 3 points, taking home $84 each: GMs Leonid Yudasin and Ildar Ibragimov, and NMs Yevgeniy Gershov and David Zimbeck.
13-year-old Alex Lenderman and Igor Dayen (re-entry) divvied up the $207 top prizes in the Under 2200 Section by scoring 3.5 points each, while Ed Kopiecki, Iryna Zenyuk and Thomas Waymouth shared the $83 Under 2000 honors with 3 points a piece.
This was the 16th annual 15 Grand Prix Point, Thursday Night Extravaganza at the historic Marshall Chess Club, and several out-of-towners took advantage of the proximity to the upcoming World Open in Philadelphia to sharpen their tactics a bit. The star-studded, 54-player field that night featured 16 Masters, including six GMs, three IMs and one unstoppable boy on a rampage!

July 22. 65th New York Masters.
This edition of the New York Masters brought us a lot of brand new faces. Israeli GM Victor Mikhalevski has been in the States for a couple of weeks and participated in the World Open earlier this month in Philadelphia, and decided to make his New York Masters debut. Dutch FM Jan van de Mortel is no stranger to chess events, having been a successful journalist for KasparovChess and spent some time in New York City in the past. Jake Kleiman has been a successful junior for quite some time, but hasn't had many chances to shine, living in Tennessee. Adam Maltese isn't a brand new face, but by making his third appearance as a qualifier, has enshrined himself on the Website. The presence of Six GMs made this a very exciting event, especially as we have a very strong crop of dangerous 2300-2400 players. After last week's insanity with tons of upsets, nothing was going to be taken for granted, even as the GMs played relatively easy opponents in Round 1. Click for More

"They Came, They Saw, They Conquered!"
That was undoubtedly the Mission of the two foreign players who tested the waters of Greenwich Village this past Thursday-- and found them to be quite inviting! GM Darmen Sadvakaso of the Republic of Kazikstan, who finished a half point outside the Winners' Circle in Philadelphia earlier this month, had no trouble finding the mark this time. His point was that being Kasparov's "sparring" partner can have its benefits, and he proved this to his four opponents that evening. But Darmen shared the spotlight with WGM Tea Bosboom-Lanchava of the Netherlands, who also mowed down her four opponents with professional precision. They each won $155 and a broom to commemorate their sweeps. Four others were stopped a point behind, at 3-1: IM Jay Bonin and NM Richard Shtivelband both won $25 for tying for 3rd-4th, while Marajudin Daftani and Kubera Naganathan each brought home $100 in Under 2200 class prizes. Naganathan (at 1782, ranked 30th at the beginning) almost missed playing the first game, but more than made up for it with an impressive 2287 tournament performance!
A crowd of 34 showed up for the monthly Grand Prix edition of the Thursday Night Action at the Marshall Chess Club.

Allen Kato took Second with 3-1, and six-year-old Kabir Peshawaria literally had his hands full with the Third Place trophy for 2.5. Samuel Johns was the top-scoring unrated player.

After a quick last-round draw, GM Alexander Stripunsky and IM Yury Lapshun were waiting to see who might join them in the Winners' Circle of the New York July Game/60 Grand Prix on Saturday July 26th. Not IM Jay Bonin, who was paired with 15-year-old superstar Dmytro Kedyk, who trailed Bonin by half a point. After winning a pawn in the opening, Jay began to count the prize money a bit prematurely, and allowed his young opponent the chance to complicate the position. Discretion is definitely the wiser part of valor against Dmytro's tactical wizardry, and when the smoke began to clear it was also clear that Dmytro had been bad to The Bone again. None other than FM Asa Hoffmann would become the third leg of the winning triumverate, when he took his less experienced opponent out of the opening book on move two and right into the mainlines of the Hoffmann Book! Asa cleverly steered the game into something resembling a Fromm's Gambit with colours reversed(!), aptly demonstrating why some opening variations are destined to live on only as footnotes in the Encyclopedia of The Weird.
The three winners each finished with 3.5 in the four-round drama, taking home $205 a piece, while no fewer than seven players tied for the various Under 2200 class prizes with 2.5 points: Vladimir Polyakin, Daniel Lowinger, Greg Fernandez, Adam Maltese, Tatiana Vayserberg, Sarkis Again, and eight-year-old Parker Zhao.
Thirty-three took part in the four-round, 15 Grand Prix Point Game/60 tournament.

At the end of the long weekend, of course it was IM Jay Bonin who had the last laugh, as he is wont to. Jay bested the field-- literally defeating everyone else-- in the Sunday Night Game/10 Quick Round-Robin July 27th, where he swept the whole room, 5-0! Fellow IM Yury Lapshun, after paying proper homage to The Bone, took the rest of the spoils with clear Second, 4-1. And no Quick Chess scramble would be without Lev Zilbermintz, who took the Top Under 2000 honors at 3-2.
While Jay was just beginning his fun, the 20-player, July Under 1800 was already winding down.

July 27. NY July Under 1800!
4-SS, G/60, Chess Center at Marshall Chess Club. $$ (480 b/32 paid entries): 150-100-50, top U1600 $95, top U1400 $85, $75 limit to unr.

Youngsters Shawn Martinez and Daniel Pomerantz divvied up the $141 top prizes with their 3.5 scores, while Jay Kleinman, Angel and Eric Alvares shared 3rd Place with the Under 1600 prize pool. And Timur Milgrom had the next-to-the-last laugh, when he was paired with his only remaining rival for the Under 1400 Prize-- and was handed the kitty on a silver platter after his opponent (who undoubtedly failed to consider matters carefully), in a wonderful example of "pairing justice," promptly fofeited the game and the class prize in the last round!
A happily exhausting weekend of chess work at the world famous Marshall!

We had some exciting new players in this week's NY Masters. Along with 3 GM's (Yudasin, Stripunsky and Ibragimov), we had reigning World Under 18 girls champion, the German IM and WGM, Elisabeth Paehtz. We also had two new female players in the competition, as Georgian WGM, Tea Lanchava-Bosboom is in town and decided to check out the action. Also joining us was new USCF Executive Board member, Beatriz Marinello. Our third and final new competitor was 23 year old Radu Murgescu, originally from Romania, but now living in Ithica, New York. August 5. 67th New York Masters Play by Play Report.
We had another week with strong female representation, as 3 strong women came to play. German IM and WGM Elisabeth Paehtz was in the mix again, hoping to repeat her nice performance from the previous week. Georgian, now Dutch WGM Tea Bosboom-Lanchava decided to play once more before leaving NYC, and hoped to have a strong performance. Meanwhile the quickly improving Laura Ross was in the field and ready to do some serious damage, as evidenced by her 3.5/4 score on Thursday night. She always performs well on Tuesdays and Thursdays and had all the wannabe qualifiers crying foul, as when she routintely scores 3.5 or 3 points, no one else has a chance to play. Because of these facts combined with the fact that her rating is soon to be over 2200, the NY Masters has made an executive decision to grant her an honorary masters title, and allow her to play on Tuesdays when she desires. If she continues her typical results in this tournament, the master title should not even be one month away! Click for More

Marshall CC's favorite IM, Jay Bonin, the persevering NM Rafael Furdzik, fresh off his vacation to Curacao, and steadfast FM Boris Privman shared first place honors and nearly $300 Thursday evening. NM Furdzik nudged IM Bonin for a draw in round three, and in pole position terminated tournament favorite, Senior Master Dmytro Kedyk, in the last round. FM Boris Privman overcame strong 4th seed FM Salvijus Bercys in the last round to join Bonin and Furdzik. Edward Duckworth turned out to be the surprise of the event earning the worth of his first round full point bye (as the lowest rated!) with a 385 point upset in the last round. NM David Zimbeck's sense of danger compelled him to bolt after his first round win, forfeiting to Duckworth and dodging Duckworth's bulldozer finish for a part of 3rd-6th place with 3 points and the clear $80 Under 2000 prize. Under 2200 participants also 3rd-6th, Aleksan Pelekhaty and Sanne De Boer, split $85. Turning lemons into lemonade was the way Aaron Hawkins saw the infamous Under 1400 Scholastic Novice on August 14th. Merely being one of the 50 million thrust OUT of the spotlight Thursday was not enough to keep him from sweeping the room by sunlight, scoring a perfect 4-0 to win the Thursday festivities for the second week in a row. Newcomer Agron Kougani won his other three games before falling to the winner-- not bad for his first tournament! Jonathan Wong squeaked by over fellow Wong/sibling Timothy in the tie for 3rd-4th, while Brandon Moore clinched the Top Unrated Player trophy. As the players watched the lights flickering ominously while the last round's pairings were posted, they had hardly an inkling of their collective, unique answer to the Big Question: "Where were YOU in the Blackout of '03?!"

Paris Fineberg-Heymann, age 10, beats his first chess master in a USCF-rated game.

Paris Fineberg-Heymann, USCF rating: 1774, beat master Ilan Kreitner (2200) in a game- 30 tournament on 9/20/03 at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City. Paris, who arrived five minutes late to the match, played black. The young chess player-on the Pressman All-American Chess Team (2003), New York City and New York State chess champion for K-3 (2002) as well as finishing #2 at the Nationals in Dallas, Texas that same year and finally inching up to #1 on the February (2002) USCF top 100 list for age 8 in the USA-is no stranger to success. "The game was a great game," admits Paris, "I felt that I played my best."

Sunday, September 28th
Transcontinental Youth Match
Marshall CC 3 - Mechanics Institute 1
Click for Games / Results
On Sunday, September 28th, two world famous chess clubs, the Marshall Chess Club (http://www.marshallchessclub.org) and the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.org) squared off despite being being separated by 2600 miles (4150km), in what will hopefully be the first in a series of distance matches between the famous New York City and San Francisco clubs.
This match pitted four of New York's best players under the age of 16 versus four of Northern California's best and brightest. The games were played at a Game 90 + 30 second increment over the Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com).
In four very exciting games, the Marshall Chess Club won the match with the score of 3 wins to 1 loss. On board one, FM Igor Schneider and Matthew Ho went into some deep preparation in the Centre Counter Defense, based on the Anand - Lautier clash from Biel 1997. On board two, Nicholas Yap and WFM Laura Ross played an exciting game in the Sveshnikov variation of the Sicilian Defense. Yap excellently controlled the center and created tactical problems with his passed b pawn, forcing home the full point with good technique. On board three, FM Fabiano Caruana chose the Two Knights variation of the Caro Kann Defense versus Drake Wang. In a shocking blunder, Wang hung mate in one on move 9, although it must be admitted that his position was probably already quite critical. On board four, Ewelina Krubnik went headlong into Marc Tyler Arnold's Benko Gambit. Arnold played a brilliant game in true Benko Gambit style, pressuring the b2 weakness, trading queens, and winning the game. Especially pleasing was Arnold's beautiful geometric motif of Ba6-Be2-Bb5-Bd3! on three consecutive moves to seal the game, and his exchange sacrifice on b2 to tear Krubnik's position to shreds.

It is with great sadness that I report that Paul Pressman passed away on Wednesday, October 8th. Services were held the following day. Paul was a lovely, gentle man, and his presence will be greatly missed at the Marshall Chess Club. Paul was a psychiatrist, member of the club, and with his son Leif, a regular at the Friday Rapids. He and Leif were great buddies. Our deep sympathies are with Leif and his mother, Mary Pressman, and his daughters, Lori and Ruby Pressman. Members wishing to send condolences may send them to the Pressman family, care of the Marshall Chess Club; they will be forwarded to the family.

G.P.P: 20 14th Annual NY Fall Futurity!

9-SS, Chess Center at Marshall Chess Club. $$ (1,600 b/50 paid, juniors count half, minimum 2/3 of each prize Gtd): $$ 500-300-200-150-150-100, top non-FIDE $200, all FIDE 2200+ who play at least 7 rds in 4 or 5-day option, including 11/23, win $30 minimum prize ($15 minimum for FIDE 2000-2199).
Making Board One his "home" for the weekend of November 21-23rd, GM Leonid Yudasin took the shortcut to the top of the New York Fall Futurity, racking up 5 quick wins in the 3-Day (Action) Schedule on Friday evening, with an extra victory for good measure in Round 6 the next morning. Combined with three more half-points in Rounds 7-9, the former Candidate coasted the distance without difficulty, leaving early with his $500 First Prize, as in years past, a point ahead of the field.
The contest for next best was not nearly as decisive, with six players who each scored 6.5 points sharing the remaining $900 in place prizes at $150 each: FMs Thomas Bartell, 15-year-old Igor Schneider, Ilye Figler and Yefim Treger were joined by 14-year-old Salvijus Bercys and Pieter Bierkens. Three Masters shared the $200 prize for top-scoring non-FIDE-rated player: Ed Gaillard (formerly active in New York in the early 1980's at the Chess Center's 14th Street branch), Vitaly Zaderman and Jerry Simon each scored 5.5-3.5.
No fewer than ten players apparently earned FIDE-rateable performances in this tournament. Three of them built their FIDE ratings from scratch: Ed Gaillard (2216), Marajudin Daftani (2182) and 17-year-old Iryna Zenyuk (2137). They should have their international ratings published on the January 2004 FIDE List. Seven others also achieved ratable performances: Vitaly Zaderman (2241 over 8 games), Jerry Simon (2226: 5 games), William Potts (2058: 4 games), Leif Pressman (2044: 5 games) Eugene Koltunov (2016: 6 games), Matt Fischler (1912: 6 games), and Jonathan Hains (1837: 5 games). They will need similar performances in future internationally rated tournaments to fulfill the nine-game requirement.
Over 56 players packed the venerable Marshall Chess Club for the 14th edition of the annual 20 Grand Prix Point New York Fall Futurity, a record turnout for one of the few tournaments in the U.S. which provides players with the opportunity to earn international ratings over the required nine games, and which, in previous years, has traditionally been the final tournament in the U.S. to be included on the January FIDE (international) rating list.

Bruno Bier, 13-year-old James Critelli and 12-year-old Medina Parrilla each received $48 for tying for 2nd-4th with 3 points.

December 3, 2003 Press Release: 2003 EDWARD LASKER MEMORIAL AND
87TH ANNUAL MARSHALL CHESS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW YORK - Battle for New York's best chessplayer to be contested at world famous Greenwich Village club.
Round one of the 2003 Edward Lasker Memorial and 87th Marshall Chess Club Championship is to begin on Saturday, December 6, at 2 p.m. at the Marshall Chess Club, located in a landmark-designated district on West 10th Street in Manhattan.
"The Marshall Chess Club Championship has been historically one of the greatest and most important events in the United States," said John Fernandez, tournament director for this event. "Decades ago, it nearly served as a de facto United States Championship! This event brings back the prestige of this venerable tournament in one of the most famous historic chess clubs in the world."
One round a day, nine rounds in all, will be played through December 14. Weekend games begin at 2 p.m. and weekday games at 7 p.m. "At a pace of one game a day, the level of play should be very good," said Jeffrey Tannenbaum, chairman of the Marshall's tournament committee. Games and results are to be posted each day on the Marshall's web site (http://www.marshallchessclub.org).
The tournament is open to all masters, to 13 qualifiers from the recent Marshall Amateur Championship and to a handful of invited top junior players. The tournament has a prize fund of $5,000 and is open to non-members as well as members. The title of 2003 Marshall Chess Club Champion is to go to the highest-scoring member.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (December 6) and will include a commemorative lecture by Life Master Gary Forman in honor of Edward Lasker and Mona Karff. The late Mr. Lasker was a great chessplayer, an inventor and a Marshall member. The late Mrs. Karff was repeatedly the U.S. women's chess champion, and also a Marshall member. A fund created by Mrs. Karff in her will is the principal source of financing for the tournament. "This event honors two signal personalities in the history of American chess, Mona Karff and Edward Lasker," said Allen Kaufman, a former president of the Marshall.

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin had no problem making it to the finish line a whole point ahead of the 25-player field this past Thursday December 4th, processing all four of opponents with little difficulty, and departing with his $117 First Prize before the midnight hour. 16-year-old Adam Maltese, 13-year-old Sarkis Agaian, David Franklin and Jonathan Corbblah all tied for 2nd-5th with 3 points out of 4, along with 1st-4th Under 2200, bringing home $48 each. Paul Hoffman, Leif Pressman and Gabor Schnitzler shared the $66 Under 2000 Prize at 2.5 points a piece. And Franklin, who turned in a formidible 2450 tournament performance despite his last round loss to Benjamin on Board One, was the well-deserved Qualifier to the next Tuesday Masters' Tournament on December 16th.
While the Marshall Club Championship takes place, there will be no "4 Rated Games Tonight!" on December 11th. The next Thursday Night Action is December 18th at 7:00 pm. Good Luck to all the Club Championship participants!

BONIN STUNS SHABALOV; 5 WAY TIME FOR FIRST
The Marshall Championship Continues with Round 5 at 7 PM. There is a 5 way tie for first place. In round four, International Master Jay Bonin stunned US Champion Alexander Shabalov with a profound and sharp sacrifice of a pawn, which lead to an overloading of the black queen and a decisive attack.

Ehlvest -Fedorowicz: A Perplexing Draw;
5 Players In Dead Heat For First After 5 Rounds
Grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia and John Fedorowicz of the United States fought their way to an enigmatic draw in the fifth Round of the 2003 Marshall Chess Club Championship in New York City. The game, a Gruenfeld Defense, saw the former world championship candidate gain a clear edge and who seemed to be coasting to a positional squeeze, when Fedorowicz mesmerized the spectators at the Marshall and the many following the game online (ICC) with 24.c5, sacrificing a knight for two pawns. Elhvest decided that Black's counterplay was enough.
Grandmasters Jan Ehlvest, Leonid Yudasin, Julio Becerra, John P Fedorowicz, and International Master Jay Bonin are tied with 3 ˝ after 5 rounds.

EHLVEST ALONE IN FIRST BY ˝, TOPPLES BONIN IN ROUND 6;
FOUR TRAIL WITH 4 WITH 3 ROUNDS LEFT;
EHLVEST HAS WHITE AGAINST SHABALOV TODAY
Grandmaster Jan Ehlvest of Estonia snagged an apparently lost opening thread by Jay Bonin, the New York International Master, to weave a winning technical endgame and take sole possession of first place in the 87th Marshall Chess Club Championship in New York City. Bonin, who essayed the Botvinnik System of the English Opening, seemed to lose his opening initiative after 16.Nc1. Ehlvest soon won the exchange for a pawn, and though Bonin fought valiantly, he could not save the game. In another headline match, US Champion Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov defeated Israeli Grandmaster Leonid Yudasin's Center Counter Defense in relentless style. Ehlvest will face Shabalov in the 7th round today at 2 PM. After 6 rounds, Ehlvest leads with 4 ˝, followed by Grandmasters Shabalov, Becerra, and Fedorowicz, and FIDE Master Ilye Figler, all with 4.
