The Marshall Chess Club received the following sad news from Janet Langjahr:
The family of Eric Langjahr regrets to inform you that Eric passed away on January 2, 2004. We take comfort knowing that the horse-racing, handicapping, technical and chess-playing communities share our profound loss and join us in our mourning. Eric was a member of the Marshall for a number of years starting about 30 years ago. Jay Bonin, who may still be a member, once knew Eric fairly well.
Eric Langjahr, a pioneer in computer-aided handicapping of thoroughbred horse racing, died in Las Vegas on January 2, 2004 at 47.
Eric, the visionary co-founder, co-owner, and President of International Thoroughbred Superhighway, Inc. (a/k/a ITS), revolutionized horse-playing when he wrote The Handicapper's DailyR, the award winning original online racing form software.
Eric's popular programs also set an industry standard for racing data output files that has been widely adopted even by the competitors who followed in Eric's footsteps.
Prior to striking out on his own, Eric was a computer programming consultant who was much sought after by top Wall Street financial firms.
A true Renaissance Man, Eric was also a highly accomplished amateur chess player who enjoyed competing in tournaments, an avid reader and book collector, a music lover of eclectic tastes, and a ham radio operator.
Eric is survived by his parents, Charles and Ruth Langjahr, and his sister, Janet Langjahr.

Congratulations to eleven year old Fabiano Caruana on becoming the youngest FIDE and USCF Master. Fabiano achieved a USCF rating of 2237 for the official April list.
Way to go Fabiano!!!
April 23 Marshall CC Under-1400 Trophy Swiss
3SS, G/30. After a wait of one additional week, the first-ever Marshall CC Friday U1400 tournament was held at the newly-renovated Marshall Chess Club on Friday, April 23! Soothing soft-toned walls and brand new flooring awaited the players in the Great Hall as they registered and prepared for battle. At 7pm, four players held the distinction of opening the inaugural event, a three-round, Game/30. In the end, it was the newest Marshall member, Wally J Soto, who vanquished all of his rivals to go 3-0 in what turned out to be an all-play-all quad, winning the First Place Trophy. It was also Wally's first chess tournament after joining the USCF at registration, and he came away with a 1658 rating! Anders Larson won Second Place, and John Adkins won Third Place. The Marshall CC Friday U1400 will be a weekly series, the next event taking place on April 30. This tournament is the ideal place for lower-rated players to hone their skills and eventually sneak up on unsuspecting opposition in Open tournaments held at the Marshall!

Chess Center of New York at the Marshall Chess Club: June 24, 2004
In the early 1990's, young Gata Kamsky was a veritable
fixture in New York Thursday Night Action tournaments. His
usual "customer" in the last-round was IM Kamran Shirazi, and
the spectators were invariably treated to a wild and ferocious
melee each week, with "the Shah" finding novel ways of mixing
it up right from the beginning, only to succumb inevitably to
the boy wonder in the end.
The last time Kamsky made an appearance in the Four Rated
Games Tonight tournament was during the 6th Annual Thursday
Night Action Championship in June 1993, at the Manhattan Chess
club, when he plowed through three 2600's on the way to a
climactic last-round duel on Board One with GM Joel Benjamin,
which ended in a draw after an amazing Rook and Pawn endgame.
Eleven years later, in the 17th edition of the annual
Thursday Night Championship, at the Marshall Chess Club,
things did not change all that much. Rated 2784, Kamsky was
no doubt surprised to start the tournament on Board Two!
After processing his first two Masters, and then drawing with
fellow GM Daniel Fridman, Gata defeated the top-ranked player,
GM Vitali Golod (2788!), to re-emerge at the top of the chart,
tied with GMs Nick De Firmian, Alex Stripunsky and Daniel
Fridman.
Two more Alex's won money Thursday, Lenderman and Barnett,
who scored 3 points to share the Under 2400 prize.
Ervin Matthew and Darius Mohammad-Pour won their first
three games and drew each other to divvy up the Under 2200
Section, while Nick Panico, John Arias, Jimmy Metzger and
Gregory Kimmel shared the Top Under 2000 honors with three
points a piece.
The 56 player, 15 Grand Prix Point Action Chess
Extravaganza on Thursday Night, June 24th featured 18 Masters,
including three IMs and five GMs!
