May 16. St. John's Masters at the Marshall Chess Club.
4SS, G/30. Third Tues. of every month. Open to players rated over 2100 (plus one qualifier per week from CCNY at the Marshall's Thursday Night Action) First 3 finishers share prizes. Top U2400: special class prize. Special prize for biggest upset.
It was no surprise that GM Jaan Ehlvest tied for first in the May SJM. It was the way he did it - he lost to GM Nick De Firmian in the last round. De Firmian himself had lost in Round Two to IM Jay Bonin and had to win to share first. So he did.
Bonin only shared third, since he lost to Ehlvest and drew longtime rival FM Asa Hoffmann in the finale. FM Farai Mandizha and Victor Ying joined the logjam at third with 2.5 pts. each. However, "Bone" took home the Upset prize for his win over the former US Champion, just as he did in March's SJM.
As usual, there was pizza and soda for the players and staff, courtesy of co-organizer Dr. Frank Brady. Thanks, Frank!

Jerry Simon, Former Marshall Champion, Dies at 63
By Ronnie Koppel
Jerry C. Simon, one of the strongest U.S. players over the age of 50, died in New York on May 24. He was 63 years old and had undergone hospital treatment for brain cancer diagnosed about eight months earlier, according to his family.
Simon, a national master known for preparation and tenacity, won the 1983 championship of the Marshall Chess Club in New York. In October 2001 he entered the U.S. Senior Open, an event for players 50 or over that was held on a ship off the shore of California. He came in first in a field of 44 after defeating Grandmaster Anatoly Lein.
A frequent entrant in tournaments, Simon played in 456 events rated by the Crossville, Tennessee-based U.S. Chess Federation since the beginning of 1991, according to electronic records that go back no further. He probably participated in additional hundreds of competitions in years before that.
Jerry Simon was liked by everyone,'' wrote Douglas Bellizzi, president of the Marshall, in a statement posted on the club's Web site. "He was soft-spoken, but a fierce competitor at the chessboard.''
"Sessions with Simon often involved protracted trench warfare," said Jeffrey Tannenbaum, a vice president of the Marshall, in an email. "He was hard to defeat.'' Several years ago, when games were often adjourned after move 40 and resumed a day or more later, Simon's penchant for study brought him extra triumphs, Tannenbaum said. Simon's main weapon was no secret: a well-used set of Informants, the periodical from Eastern Europe.
Jerry Charles Simon was born on December 12, 1942, to Paul Simon and Paula Koppel Simon, who owned a candy-making business named Amourette in the Washington Heights section of New York's Manhattan. Jerry worked in the factory as a teenager. Jerry's shadow, cousin Ronnie - the author of this article -- was never far from Jerry.
We learned to play chess without sight of the board from a TV show hosted by a noted blindfold player, Grandmaster George Koltanowski of San Francisco. That skill helped us get through bittersweet work days as we fashioned chocolate-covered bees, ants, caterpillars and grasshoppers.
Simon broke loose from the business after completing his undergraduate work at New York University, and a master's degree in economics from the New School for Social Research (now New School University), also in New York. He taught accounting and economics at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut and Kean University in Union, New Jersey.
He later joined Commerzbank New York, the U.S. branch of a German bank, as an officer in the tax department. He and his boss, Chris Janson, organized a chess team. Jerry played 1st board and advanced, along with me and Chris, to the Bankers League of New York championship.
Simon's "day job" during the last 20 years with Commerzbank didn't keep him from the game. He got his "daily lunchtime chess fix" through speed sessions with players including Asa Hoffmann, a New York master, at outdoor tables in the Wall Street area.
Jerry learned to play from his uncle, Joseph Koppel, at J. Hood Wright Park in Washington Heights. Joe introduced Jerry to Mitchell Saltzberg, a former New York State champion, who took Jerry to clubs including the Marshall.
Jerry liked to create "theatre," as he put it. In the park, we would duplicate brilliancy games of Alekhine and Botvinnik and other champions. We left kibitzers dumbstruck with Jerry's queen sacrifices, though the spectators weren't fooled long.
Playing in the park also helped Jerry meet the love of his life, Arlene Baum, whom he married in 1987. (Thanks to Jerry, I met Karen Baum, Arlene's sister, who became my wife.)
Arlene maintained a tolerance for the game that is rare in non-players, and often accompanied Jerry on chess vacations, including cruises.
On May 28, Jerry Simon was buried at a cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.

UPSETS ABOUND AT ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
Only one favorite was left standing at the end of the June edition of the St. John's Masters.
GM Leonid Yudasin held fast amid a torrent of upsets to tie for first with veteran IM Jay Bonin in the most recent Tuesday event, held on June 20 at the venerable Marshall Chess Club. Yudasin won his first 3 games, including a 13 move knockout of IM Justin Sarkar, then battened down the hatches against young Polish GM Kamil Miton to earn a draw and a share of first and second prizes with Bonin.
Bonin was the upset king of the night, drawing Miton in round two, then defeating the higher rated (if only slightly) opponents FM Salvijus Bercys and FM Tom Bartell in rounds three and four, respectively. Bonin and Yudasin each took home $200 for their efforts.
Bonin may have recorded the most upsets, but for quality, the champ was young Expert Leif Pressman. Pressman knocked off FM Asa Hoffmann in Round 3, clinching the prize for biggest upset since in the last round the only pairing that could yield a numerically greater upset was the game Sarkar-Pressman. Amazingly, Leif "beat himself" by knocking off Sarkar as well, justly earning a tie for third with Miton! Pressman's two prizes totalled $120, while Miton earned $80.
Veteran master Doug Pader and up-and-comer Evan Rabin divided Under 2300 honors and took home consolation money of $20 each. 15 players entered.

July 15-16. New York
New York State Women's Championship. Open to all women and girls.
4SS, 30/90, SD/60. $$500/20:$200-$100-$50, $75 1500-1799, $75 U1500.
The Marshall Chess Club ran the New York State Women's Championship on July
15-16 and the New York State Senior Championship on July 22-23. Nine played
in the former, which was won by top-ranked Tatiana Vayserberg (2094) with a
3-1 score. She held difficult positions against third-ranked Julia Kerr
(1932) in Round 2 and second-ranked Dorothy Teasley (2013) in Round 4, also
defeating Alena Kuzniatsova (1760) and first day leader Tamara Chanadiri of
New Jersey (1926) along the way. Kerr and Kuzniatsova had an exciting draw
in Round 4 to tie for the second place and 1500-1799 prizes with scores of
2½-1½. Five of the remaining players scored 2-2; Teasley, Chanadiri,
Nicole Maffeo (1783) and Linda Diaz (1573) split the third prize four ways
while Fei-Tzin Lee (1121) took the under 1500 prize with the same score.
Because of the small number of players, Fei-Tzin Lee was paired with Lilia
Poteat (1305) for a second time. If Lilia had won the rematch, every player
would have won a prize(!) (if we hadn't done this the computer would have
paired Poteat (0) with Vayserberg (2½), which no sensible TD should permit).
Club President Doug Bellizzi presented flowers to all the winners.
Ed Frumkin directed, with assistance from Andre Harding and Nick Conticello.

The Senior (age 50 and up) drew 14 players and was won by NM Ilye Figler
(2236) with a score of 3½-½. IMs Jay Bonin (2391) and Renato Naranja (2210)
split second and third with 3-1. Bonin's path to the top was thwarted early
by draws against Mulazim Muwwakkil (1817) and Timothy Harris (1897).
Naranja had to settle for a draw against Frumkin in round 2 when the latter
sacked his Queen for two minors to trap the King in the center. Figler
defeated Rito Ilao (1692) and Edward Kopiecki (1981) the first day, held a
difficult position against Naranja in Round 3 and ground down surprise
co-leader Ed Frumkin (2026) in Round 4. The 1700-1999 prize was taken by
Harris with 2½-1½ in an interesting last round win from Muwwakkil, which
nearly ended in an unusual mate by all four minor pieces. Sandra Oliver
(1612) defeated Sherman Boim (1530) in a head to head last round game to
take top under 1700 with a 2-2 score. The prizes were $140 to Figler,
$52.50 each to Bonin, Naranja, Harris and Oliver. Ed Frumkin directed, with
assistance from Doug Bellizzi and Nick Conticello. The Marshall enjoyed
both events very much and we hope to run them again next year, with more
players, of course.

Aug 15. St. John's Masters at the Marshall Chess Club.
4SS, G/30. Third Tues. of every month. Open to players rated over 2100 (plus one qualifier per week from CCNY at the Marshall's Thursday Night Action). For each event, money added to prize fund by the sponsors, St. John's University, and other generous patrons. First 3 finishers share prizes. Top U2400: special class prize. Special prize for biggest upset.
NIGHT OF THE BISHOPS AT ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
The August edition of the St. John's Masters saw the return of an old face, an impressive result for a young face, and three fateful Bishop endings.
The old face was GM Gennady Sagalchik, who made his first appearance in a tournament on the premises since the 68th New York Masters in 2003.
Sagalchik tied for first with GM Michael Rohde, scoring 3.5-0.5 and defeating top rated GM Leonid Yudasin in the third round in a game that was the biggest in the event.
Yudasin seemed to be a little better in a minor piece ending, but in time trouble he exchanged a pair of Knights, granting Sagalchik a strong passed pawn which soon queened, leaving him a Bishop ahead. Sagalchik's ensuing quick draw with Rohde left the two leaders ahead of the field and earned them $275 each. Moreover, Sagalchik's upset of Yudasin earned him the prize for the biggest upset and an extra $55.
The young face was once and future Master Leif Pressman, who matched his own feat earlier in the year by knocking off two titled players in the last two rounds. First FM Asa Hoffmann bit the dust in Round Three, as Pressman's Bishop and two passed pawns overwhelmed Hoffmann's lone Queen. Then IM Jay Bonin, who needed to win to get a prize, overpressed in a drawn bishop ending and lost, enabling Pressman to tie for third with Yudasin. The GM and the youngster each won $110 for their efforts. Newcomer Richard Mattern scored 2.5-1.5 and won the Under 2300 prize of $55. Seventeen players competed.

Sep 19. St. John’s Masters at the Marshall Chess Club.
4SS, G/30.
4-WAY TIE IN SEPTEMBER ST.JOHN'S MASTERS
GM's Joel Benjamin, Zviad Izoria, and Leonid Yudasin and FM Boris Privman were the big winners in the September edition of the St. John's Masters event at the Marshall Chess Club. The grandmasters drew all their games amongst themselves and defeated all outsiders en route to their triumph.
Yudasin, a former World Championship candidate, had the toughest pairings, with Black against both of his colleagues, and he had to beat the resourceful IM Jay Bonin with a lone Rook and Bishop versus Rook in the last round. But he succeeded in this task and joined the quartet in first.
Privman lost to Yudasin in the first round but beat 3 non-masters to earn his $140 share.
Richard Mattern and Paulo Santanna scored 2-2 to divide the Under 2300 prize and receive $20 apiece. Anna Ginzburg won the $40 prize for biggest upset for her draw with Adam Maltese; she later drew with WIM Dorothy Teasley, a very respectable result for her first appearance in this event. 11 players entered.

FIVE TIE IN OCTOBER SURPRISE AT ST.JOHN'S MASTERS
It was no surprise that GM's Leonid Yudasin and Zviad Izoria tied for first in the Oct. 17 St. John's Masters event at the Marshall Chess Club. It was mildly surprising that IM Jay Bonin and FM Ilye Figler made the top group.
It was very surprising that Expert David Paulina made it a quintet at the top. And it was shocking that GM Jaan Ehlvest finished out of the money.
The fun began in Round One, when the Estonian GM was held to a draw by WCM Iryna Zenyuk. Zenyuk was ahead in material but both players were short of time, and Ehlvest graciously offered a draw when Zenyuk's claim of no losing chances was denied. Izoria was nicked for a draw by Figler in Round Two.
Figler fought Ehlvest to a deadlock in Round Three, while Bonin, who had beaten fellow IM Justin Sarkar in the second round, kept the balance all the way against Yudasin.
The fourth round saw Yudasin and Izoria make a short draw and await the result of the Ehlvest-Bonin tussle. A Bonin win would give Jay clear first, while any other result would make for a multiple tie for first. Bonin played steadily with Black and secured a comfortable draw. Figler beat Leif Pressman, and Paulina defeated Master Yevgeniy Margulis to make it a five-way tie at the top.
The prize for biggest upset went to young Evan Rabin, who beat the unfortunate Sarkar in the final round.
Seventeen players and one filler comprised the field. Pizza and soda were provided for the players through the generosity of co-sponsor Dr. Frank Brady of St. John's University. Thanks as always must go to Dr. Glenn Statile of St. John's for his assistance in the broadcast of games over ICC, and to assistant TD Ed Frumkin.

ZENYUK TOPS CAST OF 45, WINS SIMON MEMORIAL SINGLE-HANDED
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Leave it to Marshall CC President Doug Bellizzi to offer the perfect one-liner to sum up a tournament. When Doug learned that the winner of the Jerry Simon Memorial played the entire event with a cast on her right arm, he said, "Iryna Zenyuk won the tournament single-handed."
The cast did not interfere with the Ukrainian-born Zenyuk's domination of the 2006 Marshall CC Amateur Championship, named after former Marshall CC Champion and former US Senior Champion Jerry C. Simon, who passed away earlier this year. Zenyuk won her first four games and saved a difficult game with the dangerous Paulo Santanna in the last round to take clear first place with 4.5 points and the record (we believe) first prize for this event of $360.
Santanna was the lowest-rated of the quartet of 4-1 scorers, which included Experts David Paulina, Dale Hammer, and Evan Rabin. The "Gang of Four"
divided second, third, fourth, and the Top Under 2000 prizes and each took home $147.50. Veteran Class A players Sabrija Mehmedovic, Frank Paciulli, and Leon "Marshall" Zukoff all scored 3.5 and divided fifth, sixth and the second Under 2000 prize, which came to $76.67 apiece.
Former Assistant Manager Anatoliy Ostrovskiy and Terence Lamb drew their last game against each other and split the two prizes for Under 1800, which enriched them by $85 each.
The record prize fund of $1350 was enabled by a generous contribution from Arlene Simon, Jerry's widow. The President informed the writer after the tournament that he will introduce a motion at the next meeting of the Board of Governors to have the annual Amateur Championship tournament named after Jerry Simon in perpetuity.
Eighteen of the 45 entries made a score of 3 or more points and therefore have earned the right to pay an entry fee and play in the 2006 Marshall Chess Club Championship, a 9 round Swiss which will start on Friday, December 1.
