HOFFMANN TOPS YOUTHFUL FIELD IN JANUARY OPEN
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
FM Asa Hoffmann dug deep to finish ahead of a talented, young field in the Marshall's January Open. The veteran scored 3.5 from 4 against a field whose combined ages may not have matched his 63 years and in so doing captured the first prize of $115. Asa's last two opponents, juniors Richard Tuhrim and Eigen Wang, joined Dushyanth Reddivari and visiting Florida master Rodelay Medina in the quartet tying for second, third, and Under 2000. Each of these 3 point scorers won $44.25. Wang missed several chances to beat Hoffmann in the third round, but won a difficult Rook-and Pawn ending against teenaged Expert Michael Thaler in the finale. Tuhrim, who had drawn Thaler in Round Two, executed the rare and tricky Bishop-and- Knight mate against veteran Mitch Fitzko in Round Three and took a short draw with Hoffmann at the end.
Juniors Miles Hinson and Aaron Coppa joined veterans Ken Cohen and Eric Hecht as two point scorers and winners of the Under 1700 prize, earning
$13.25 each. Twenty-three entries and one filler competed in the two-day tournament.

EHLVEST, IZORIA TOP JANUARY ST. JOHN"S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest and Zviad Izoria topped a small but very strong field in the January edition of the St. John's Masters at the Marshall Chess Club.
Perhaps it was the suddenly seasonal weather, or perhaps many were tired from the Liberty Bell Open which ended the day before, but only 14 players showed up for this tournament. But 8 contestants had FIDE titles, and none were rated below 2100 USCF. Ehlvest and Izoria each won
3 games and drew with GM Leonid Yudasin. The winners divided first and second prizes and took home $250 apiece, while Yudasin had to share third prize and the Under 2400 with young Expert Daniel Lowinger. After a loss to FM Mackenzie Molner in the first round, Lowinger beat three Masters, including FM Boris Privman, a triumph which earned him the $40 prize for the biggest upset. Lowinger also earned $90 for his tie with Yudasin.
The Under 2300 prize was hotly contested. Three players tied with 2 points. WFM Iryna Zenyuk drew with IM Jay Bonin in the first round, won a game, lost to Yudasin, and had a half-point bye. Visiting New Jersey master Roy Greenberg beat Privman and the third party in the tie, Expert David Paulina, who nonetheless knocked off two Masters. Zenyuk, Greenberg, and Paulina each earned $13.34 for their fine play.
Thanks as always for the pizza and soda must go to co-organizer Dr.
Frank Brady. Dr. Glenn Statile did his usual yeoman work assisting with the ICC broadcast. And special thanks to an anonymous donor who pledged $100 to the prize fund.

NAKAMURA, STRIPUNSKY TIE IN FEBRUARY ST.JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Whenever GM Hikaru Nakamura plays in the St. John's Masters, something interesting is sure to happen. Two months ago, he became the first player to record a 4-0 sweep, beating GM's in the final two rounds. It looked for all the world like he would do it again, but at the last second a funny thing happened...
Nakamura's first opponent was Yefim Treger, who tried the unusual opening 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 e5!? Qc7 4 Qe2 with White. After Naka's reply 4...g5! Treger soon felt obliged to sacrifice a Knight but was well and duly checkmated. FM Boris Privman was up next, and after a rare Nakamura blunder found himself a piece ahead with an attack. But on his 28th move Privman missed a winning combination (28...Rxe2) and soon succumbed to a devastating counterattack.
Round Three saw the eagerly awaited Izoria-Nakamura pairing. GM Zviad Izoria has won practically every G/30 event in the Club's (and CCNY's) 4 Rated Games Tonight! series recently, and was runnerup to the former US Champ two months ago. Naka defended a Yugoslav Attack Dragon with an early...a6, the way Reshevsky and Botvinnik used to play. Izoria got what appeared to be a strong attack, but lost the thread, fell short of time, and in the ending allowed a nifty back-rank trick.
Meanwhile, GM Alexander Stripunsky was winning 3 games in his usual solid fashion, beating Michael Pearson, FM Asa Hoffmann, and IM Jay Bonin to set up a last round showdown with Nakamura. Sasha had lost to Hikaru in the finale two months earlier, and found himself in trouble this time too. In a Slav Defense, Nakamura, with a big edge in space, sacrificed an exchange to destroy Black's pawn structure. Stripunsky gave the exchange back, but Nakamura set up connected passed pawns, won the exchange again, and had a nasty pin on the last rank. Stripunsky gave countless Queen checks, but appeared to have run out of checks and gave up his Bishop. Naka took the Bishop, but after a harmless looking pawn exchange, suddenly realized to his horror that Sasha's Queen was the only man who could move. Stripunsky duly plunked his Queen next to Nakamura's King, forcing a stalemate! A disappointed Nakamura and a relieved Stripunsky each collected a $250 check for their efforts.
Izoria, Hoffmann, and Jon Jacobs all scored 3 points to claim the remaining prizes (third, under 2400, under 2300) and take home $63.34 apiece, and qualifier Damarcus Thomas took home $30 for upsetting Vladimir Polyakin. 22 players competed.
All of Nakamura's games were broadcast on the ICC, and may be replayed by ICC members by searching the library list of the account "MarshallCC."
Thanks as always for the pizza and soda go to cosponsor Dr. Frank Brady.
Dr. Glenn Statile assisted the writer in relaying the moves for broadcast, and Ed Frumkin performed his usual yeoman service as assistant TD.
The next event in the series is Tuesday, March 20, 2007.

IM Renato Naranja, temporarily demoted to Expert, won the Under 2200 prize of $100 with a 2.5-1.5 score, while First Category player Jeffrey Lawrence's score of 2.5-1.5 earned him the Under 200 prize of $100.
Lawrence's result is especially notable in that he beat Bonin and drew with Naranja.
20 players entered the event.

STRIPUNSKY, YUDASIN MARCH TO VICTORY IN ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Four Grandmasters showed up for the March edition of the St. John's Masters at the Marshall Chess Club. Two won, one placed, and one went away empty-handed.
The winners were Leonid Yudasin and Alexander Stripunsky, who each won 3 and drew one to head a small but strong field. Jaan Ehlvest, who had drawn with IM Jay Bonin in Round two, took a short draw with Yudasin in the last round to take clear third with a score of 3. Zviad Izoria drew with Stripunsky in Round Two, but lost to Yudasin in Round Three and was on the ropes against young Expert Dan Lowinger in Round Four. Izoria pulled out the win, but his score of 2.5 left him out of the prize money.
The veteran masters Ilye Figler and Yefim Treger took advantage of a well timed half-point bye to divide the Under 2400 and Under 2300 prizes with 2.5 points apiece. Qualifier Aigboje Aregbeyen, the lowest-rated contestant, took the prize for the biggest upset by drawing with Figler in the opening stanza. 16 players and one filler contested the event.
The next event in the series will take place on April 17. 2007.
Prizes:
First-Second: GM Alexander Stripunsky, GM Leonid Yudasin, 3.5-0.5, $250 each.
Third: GM Jaan Ehlvest, 3-1, $100
Under2400/Under2300: FM Ilye Figler, Yefim Treger, 2.5-1.5, $45 each.
Biggest Upset: Aigboje Aregbeyen, $30.

MARSHALL MEMBERS SHINE AT FOXWOODS
by Nick Conticello, Assistant Manager
The Marshall Chess Club was a dominant force at the 9th annual Foxwoods Open, held over the Easter weekend.
All four GM's who tied for first in the Open section are familiar faces at the Marshall. Gata Kamsky, the champion, made his return to chess after a 10-year hiatus at the Marshall in 2004. Jaan Ehlvest has won the Championship of the Club three times. Zviad Izoria has played in many Thursday action swisses with a nearly perfect record, and Alexander Stripunsky has played in the Club Championship and the monthly St. John's Masters many times. Also, Club Amateur Champion Iryna Zenyuk made the norm for Women's International Master.
The Under 2200 section saw Marshallites take the top three places.
12-year-old Parker Zhao and 18-year-old Leif Pressman tied for first with 6 points out of 7 without the loss of a game and won over $3000 apiece. Richard Tuhrim, 13, and Nick Conticello, 51, tied with two others for third through sixth with 5.5 and earned $865.50. NY State Women's Champion Tatiana Vayserberg was part of a throng tied for ninth and tenth with 4.5.
No Marshall member won a prize in the Under 2000 section. The best scores were turned in by Nelson Farber and Michael Chiang at 4.5. But young Anna Ginzburg dominated the Under 1800 section, scoring 6.5 out of 7 and taking home over $4000. Ginzburg was one of the few solo first place finishers in the event.
Finally, longtime member Michael Mendez Jr. scored 5 points in the Under 1600 section and tied for eighth through tenth.
The Marshall is pleased to congratulate these members , and all its members who played with distinction in this important tournament.
A celebration is planned for April 27th. See Below.

USUAL SUSPECTS ROUND UP APRIL ST.JOHN'S
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
For once, there weren't many surprises at the St. John's Masters. The three GM's took the top three prizes.
Zviad Izoria and Leonid Yudasin drew with each other and beat everybody else to tie for first in the April edition of the ongoing series at the Marshall Chess Club. The winners took home $250 apiece. Michael Rohde won his first three games and lost to Yudasin to claim clear third prize of $100.
Veteran Master Ernest "Steve" Colding was the surprise winner of the Under 2400 prize, earning $80 by drawing with IM Jay Bonin in the last round for 2.5 points. Four players salvaged $10 by scoring 2 points and dividing the Under 2300 prize: Yefim Treger, FM Boris Privman, Yevgeniy Margulis, and Leif Pressman. But Pressman also scored the $40 upset prize by knocking off the luckless Bonin in the first round.
13 entries and two fillers competed. The next event in the series will take place on May 15, 2007.

FOUR TIE IN MAY ST. JOHN'S
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
According to the classic Meat Loaf song, two out of three ain't bad. By that standard, the May St. John's Masters wasn't bad either, as two-thirds of the 12 entries went home with prizes.
The big winners were the GM's Zviad Izoria and Leonid Yudasin and the IM's Yury Lapshun and newbie Alex Lenderman, each of whom scored 3 out of 4 to divide the first three prizes and take home $150 apiece. None of the conquering quartet lost a game.
Heading the quintet of 2 point scorers, and the only one not to win a prize, was another first-timer, Serbian GM Bosko Abramovic, who had not played a tournament in this country since 1990! Abramovic had the misfortune of being paired with both of the other GM's and lost both games. However, according to top rated spectator IM Renato Naranja, he played a textbook game against FM Boris Privman in the final round. Afterwards, Abramovic said he may be in town for a few months, so he will likely be back next month.
Privman could have joined the 3 pointers had he beaten the Serbian GM, but instead had to settle for a share of the Under 2400 and Under 2300 prizes along with Yefim Treger, Vladimir Polyakin, and Aigboje Aregbeyen, each of whom earned $30. Aregbeyen knocked off veteran New Jersey Master Roy Greenberg in the last round to win the $40 upset prize.
The tournament was notable for the absence of IM Jay Bonin, whose participation in the concurrent US Championship ended his remarkable streak of playing in every New York Masters and St. John's Masters event, a span of 148 consecutive tournaments.
Thanks as always must go to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and Assistant TD Ed Frumkin for their invaluable aid in running this event so smoothly every month. The next event in the series will take place on June 19, 2007.

IZORIA, EHLVEST SURVIVE NIGHT OF UPSETS IN JUNE ST. JOHN'S
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Three GM's was one too many for Gregory Braylovsky. The little known US Master, who played for the US Junior title in 1998, beat Genna Sagalchik and drew with Leonid Yudasin, but succumbed to Jaan Ehlvest in the final round of the June St. John's Masters tournament at the Marshall Chess Club. Ehlvest and his colleague Zviad Izoria tied for first and second and earned $250 apiece. Sagalchik and Yudasin shared third prize. A fifth Grandmaster, Michael Rohde, scored only 2.5 and was out of the money.
Braylovsky, who tied with IM Jay Bonin for the Under 2400 prize, was not the only upsetter of the evening. Newcomer Radu Murgescu held Ehlvest to a draw in the first round, while junior Richard Tuhrim drew with IM Justin Sarkar. But the biggest upset of the night was scored by chess teacher Shaun Smith, who beat the strong FM Ilye Figler in Round Three and won himself the $50 upset prize. Murgescu, Smith, Dan Lowinger, and FM Boris Privman divided the Under 2300 prize. Tuhrim won only respect as a rising talent.
Thanks to Assistant TD Ed Frumkin and cosponsor Dr. Frank Brady, who was elected President of the Marshall Chess Club the evening before.

TREGER TRIUMPHS ON THURSDAY
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
National Master Yefim Treger survived a shaky finish to capture first
prize in the most recent Thursday Members Only Swiss at the Marshall
Chess Club.
Treger entered the last round with a perfect 4-0 score after beating IM
Renato Naranja in Round Four. His opponent Anthony Greco pressed him
hard and achieved a winning Queen and Pawn ending. But at the last
minute Treger caught Greco in a clever stalemate trap and salvaged a
draw. Treger won $102.
Naranja and Jeffrey Tannenbaum tied for second and a class prize with
4-1 scores and earned $55.25 apiece. Greco's 3.5 points were good for
clear third and $42.50. 17 players and one filler competed. A new
tournament starts on August 9.

NAKAMURA, IZORIA DOMINATE JULY ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
The grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura and Zviad Izoria easily swept aside all
opposition to capture first and second prizes in the July edition of the
St. John's Masters series at the venerable Marshall Chess Club. The
winners each won their first three games and took a short draw with each
other in the fourth round and each took home $287.50.
A third grandmaster, Leonid Yudasin, was held to draws in the first two
rounds by Angel Mera of Ecuador and Dr. Lewis Eisen of New York. But
Yudasin won his last two to tie for third with Brooklyn IM Yury Lapshun.
The third place finishers won $57.50 apiece.
Longtime rivals IM Jay Bonin and FM Asa Hoffmann scored 3/4 and divided
Under 2400 honors, each winning $60. Sri Lankan FM Sunil Weeramantry and
newcomer Sean Finn made 2.5 points and tied for the Under 2300 prize,
dividing $60 between them. Chess teacher Shaun Smith won the $60 prize
for the biggest upset by defeating Mackenzie Molner.
Twenty-four players competed. Thanks for their invaluable assistance
must go to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and assistant TD Ed
Frumkin. The next event in the series will take place on August 21 of
this year.

DE FIRMIAN TOPS SEPTEMBER ST. JOHN'S
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Until Sept. 18, GM Nick De Firmian's memories of the St. John's Masters tournaments can not have been too pleasant. After Sept. 18, he has at least one event which he can recall with fondness.
The former US Champion won his first three games and then earned a draw with GM Zviad Izoria to capture the $300 first prize in the September edition of the series. De Firmian was somewhat fortunate in that his two main rivals, Izoria and GM Alexander Stripunsky, got paired with each other in the third round and took a short draw. Stripunsky was held to a draw in the finale by IM Jay Bonin and could only tie for second and third with Izoria and FM Boris Privman. Including Privman's Under 2400 prize, the trio of 3 point scorers walked off with $120 apiece.
Bonin made only 2.5-1.5, but his draw with Stripunsky won him the $30 upset prize. St. John's student Travis Patay made 2.5 and won the $30 Under 2300 prize.
14 players and one filler competed. Thanks to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and Ed Frumkin for their assistance. The next event in the series will be on Oct. 16 at 7:00 pm.

Sept. 25. Marshall CC Training Tournament
HOFFMANN WINS FIRST TRAINING TOURNEY
by Nick Conticello
FM Asa Hoffmann captured the first prize in the Marshall Chess Club's inaugural Training Tournament on Tuesday, September 25.
Hoffmann yielded a draw to second prize winner Nick Conticello but won his other games, including one over third place finisher Yefim Treger.
Conticello and Treger drew a back and forth struggle in the last round.
Eight players competed.
The Training Tournament is a new event designed by the writer for people who would like to compete without worrying about rating points or results. Since there are no USCF expenses, the event is more affordable than the Club's other tournaments. No class prizes are offered, just three place prizes to attract strong players.
In the writer's opinion, the event was a qualified success and a second training tournament is planned for some Tuesday night in November. The date will be announced within the next two weeks, pending approval of the Club's November calendar.

BONIN, FIGLER GO ONE-TWO
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
IM Jay Bonin and FM Ilye Figler went 1-2 in the October 14 Sunday Action at the Marshall Chess Club. Bonin earned his triumph by winning his first four games, the last a victory against longtime rival GM Michael Rohde. Bonin then made a short but tactically sharp draw against Figler to clinch the $85 top prize. Figler won $50 and second prize with 4/5.
Figler was held to a draw in the second round by veteran Ed Kopiecki, but defeated in succession junior phenom Kassa Korley and the Master Yefim Treger to set up his showdown with Bonin. Korley, a junior who apparently played his first event with adults at the Marshall in August, has seen his rating rise from about 1700 to the mid 2000's in nine months, and since his debut in the August 23 4 Rated Games Tonight has beaten many Masters and Experts and lost only to titled players.
Clearly this is a young man who bears watching. Korley beat Treger and junior Expert Andrew Shvartsman en route to dividing the class prizes with another young talent, Raven Sturt. Korley and Sturt drew in the last round to score 3.5 apiece and take home $42.50 each.
Shvartsman, Treger, and the newcomers Jorge Ferrerya and De Lon Phoenix scored three points and each won $8.75, technically sharing the third prize. Rohde, who had entered with a first-round bye, withdrew after losing to Bonin and did not win a prize.
17 players competed. The next Sunday Action will take place on October 27, starting at 12 Noon.

IZORIA DOMINATES OCTOBER ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
GM Zviad Izoria swept the October edition of the St. John's Masters tournament at the Marshall Chess Club. The 23-year-old Georgian won four games to finish a point and a half ahead of a small but very strong field.
Izoria was sorely tested in his last two games. FM Asa Hoffmann achieved a winning position in the early middlegame but made several mistakes in Izoria's time pressure. And St. John's student Travis Patay defended stoutly through an inferior Rook ending, but eventually lost to the more experienced GM, who was down to his last eight seconds before Patay let his flag fall in a lost position.
Patay had a sensational result, beating former US Champion GM Nick De Firmian in the first round and IM Jay Bonin in the third round. In between he lost a hard fought game to Hoffmann. Patay would tie with fellow Expert Matthew Davey for the Under 2400 and Under 2300 prizes, and his win over De Firmian earned him the prize for the biggest upset.
Hoffmann drew with De Firmian in the final round, tying with the latter for second and third prizes.
Five of the eight entrants won a prize. Thanks must go as usual to co-sponsor Dr. Frank Brady, broadcast aide Dr. Glenn Statile, and Assistant TD Ed Frumkin. The next event in the series will be held on Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 at 7 pm.

TREGER TRIUMPHS IN OCTOBER GRAND PRIX
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
The veteran master Yefim Treger outlasted a 37-player field to take the clear first prize of $250 in the Marshall Chess Club's October Grand Prix, held Oct.20-21 at the venerable New York brownstone.
Five players entered the final round with 2.5/3. Treger beat Life Master James West, but Vladimir Polyakin was overcome quickly by IM Jay Bonin.
FM Asa Hoffmann could not thwart the tenacious defense offered by WFM Iryna Zenyuk and drew. West and Polyakin were knocked out of the prize money, but the latter three players were joined by IM Renato Naranja, FM Boris Privman, and the talented juniors Sarkis Agaian and Michael Thaler in a seven way tie for second, third, and Under 2200 with three points apiece . The lucky seven each won $39.29.
The Under 2000 prize was divided by Kassa Korley, Frank Paciulli, and Jason Margiotta. The trio's reward was $33.34 apiece.

BRYANT DOMINATES SIMON MEMORIAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
Expert Todd Bryant dominated the 2nd Jerry Simon Memorial Amateur Championship, taking clear first in the tournament held at the Marshall Chess Club November 16-18, 2007. Bryant won his first four games, then uncorked a superb combination against Darius Mohammad-Pour to liquidate to a dead drawn opposite-color Bishop ending to lock up his victory and the $244 first prize.
Mohammad-Pour and Benjamin Katz posted undefeated 4-1 scores to share second and third prizes equalling $122 apiece. However, since none of the first three were Marshall Chess Club members, the title of Club Amateur Champion is divided amongst four members who scored 3.5 points:
Kassa Korley, Henry Sobo, Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, and Raven Sturt. An oddity of this event is that Korley and Sobo, rated Experts, won no prize money, while Ostrovskiy , Sturt , and nonmember Chris William won $28 each for best score Under 2000.
The prize for Under 1800 was shared by Jason Margiotta, Srinivasan Ramanujam, Darren Lustig, and Lawrence Yates, all of whom scored 2.5 points. Each of these four earned $19.50.
The top 10 finishers (including Experts Travis Patay and Paulo Santanna) won the right to enter the Edward Lasker Memorial Marshall Chess Club Championship, which will begin on December 7.
The present tournament honors the memory of Jerry Simon, a former Club Champion who died in 2006.
