HOFFMANN SQUEAKS TO VICTORY IN NEW YEAR'S FIRST
RAPIDS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
FM Asa Hoffmann sweated out a game he wasn't playing, but was rewarded
with first prize in the inaugural Marshall Friday Rapids of 2008. The
veteran easily won his first seven games before losing a favorable
position to Expert Michel Roger. Roger had previously knocked off
Hoffmann's rival Yefim Treger, and had yielded only one draw in six
rounds, and so Matthew Fischler was Hoffmann's last hope to win the
event. Fischler came through, relegating Roger to second. Fischler
would have been clear third had he not stalemated Treger in surprising
fashion in his last game.
Hoffmann won $30, Roger took $20, while Fischler, Treger, and Under
2000 winner Bora Yagiz collected $5 apiece. Nine players competed.

IZORIA, LENDERMAN TOP JANUARY ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
GM Zviad Izoria and IM Alex Lenderman dominated a strong field to
divide first and second prizes at the January edition of the St. John's
Masters at the Marshall Chess Club. The winners drew with each other
and defeated all other challengers, and walked off with $300 apiece for
their 3.5-0.5 scores.
FM Boris Privman had one of his finest tournaments in the series and
came awfully close to winning outright. He was the only player to start
with three wins, including upsets over the IM's Eli Vovsha and Yury
Lapshun. But facing Izoria with Black in the last round was a hard
task, and the GM won comfortably. Privman divided the Under 2400 and
Under 2300 prizes with St. John's student Ben Katz, whose unbeaten
result included a draw with IM Jay Bonin and wins against Adam Maltese
and FM Jon Jacobs. Privman and Katz earned $67.50 apiece for 3/4, but
Privman also took home the Upset Prize of $45 for his win over Lapshun.
Vovsha and GM Leonid Yudasin divided the third prize by scoring 3/4,
and won $60 each. Yudasin was knocked off by Lenderman in the second
round. Five other titled players finished out of the money. The ten
titled entrants (and one titled filler, WIM Dolly Teasley) made this
the strongest St. John's Masters in many months. 23 players and two
fillers competed.
Thanks as always must go to co-sponsor Dr. Frank Brady for the
refreshments, Dr. Glenn Statile for his invaluable aid in doing the ICC
broadcast, and assistant TD Ed Frumkin for logistical support. The next
event in the series will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008.

FM's FIGLER, ZENYUK HEAD JANUARY OPEN
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
FM Ilye Figler and WFM Iryna Zenyuk divided first and second prizes in
the Marshall Chess Club's January Open, a two day Swiss held on Jan. 26
and 27. The winners scored 3.5 from 4 and won $91 apiece.
Figler and Zenyuk took different routes to the same result. Figler
played all his games on Sunday, taking a bye in the first round and
winning all his remaining games. He sealed his triumph with a
surprising King fork against Leif Pressman in the finale. Zenyuk opted
for the traditional two day schedule and won her first three games,
including a neat trick to win a drawish ending against Paul Szuper. She
had the better of her final game versus FM Boris Privman but chose not
to press matters in an effort to gain a few extra dollars and agreed a
draw with the veteran endgame expert.
Perhaps Figler and Zenyuk were fortunate that top-rated IM Jay Bonin
was upset at the outset by Expert Paulo Santanna and was not paired
with either of the eventual winners. Bonin recovered in fine style,
winning his last three games and tying for third with Privman,
Santanna, and another Expert, Darius Mohammad-Pour. Mohammad-Pour
earned his standing by winning a devilishly complicated Rook-and-Pawn
ending against Master Jim West, an ending so tricky that none of the
spectating Masters, including Privman, IM Renato Naranja, and the
writer, had a full grasp of all its subtleties. Mohammad-Pour and his
fellow three-pointers won a paltry $12 each for their efforts,
herculean though they may have been.
Veteran Ed Kopiecki took home $65, as his 2.5/4 result was best in the
1700-1999/Unrated division. And Jean Nicolas also made 2.5 to win the
Under 1700 prize. He got $55.
23 entries and one filler comprised the field. A similar event, but a
Grand Prix with top prizes guaranteed , will take place on Feb. 9-10.

IZORIA, STRIPUNSKY WIN FEBRUARY ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
IM Alex Lenderman's streak of triumphs in the St. John's Masters' had
to end sometime. The veteran GM's Zviad Izoria and Alexander Stripunsky
scored 3.5/4 and took home $250 apiece as Lenderman for once left
empty-handed.
Lenderman started with two wins but was knocked off by visiting German
IM Christian Maier in the third round. Maier in turn was pummeled by
Izoria in the finale, but his three wins were good enough for a share
of third and the Under 2400 prize. Maier and Matthew Parry, a junior
from upstate NewYork, won $90 each. Maier also collected the $40 prize
for the biggest upset by winning against Lenderman.
Izoria had to work for his place, as he found himself slightly worse in
the first round against the talented and rock solid Alec Getz.
According to one eyewitness, Izoria had used all but 36 seconds of his
time by the thirteenth move (!) but gradually outplayed his youthful
challenger in a two Bishop versus Bishop and Knight ending. A short
draw with Filipino GM Mark Paragua followed, then a win over IM Jay
Bonin led to the finish.
Stripunsky drew with Bonin in the second round and beat Paragua in
Round Three and Lenderman in Round Four. Paragua drew quickly with
Bonin in the finale to finish out of the prize fund, as did the
unfortunate American IM's. Getz's 2.5 was good enough to take the $40
Under 2300 prize.
We must note here the respectable debut in this event of 11-year-old CM
Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, whose 2-2 score included a draw with the
redoubtable FM Boris Privman.
Thanks as usual to co-sponsor Dr. Frank Brady for the refreshments and
Assistant TD Ed Frumkin who also acted tonight as broadcast assistant.
Eighteen players competed. The next event in the series will take place
on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 7:00 pm.

TREGER TAKES SUPER-RAPIDS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Yefim Treger headed a top-heavy field to take the March Super-Rapids at
the Marshall Chess Club. The veteran scored 8-2 to nose out newcomer
David Epstein and FM Asa Hoffmann.
Epstein, a political science professor at Columbia University, had not
played over the board chess since 1987 but proved to be master
strength, splitting his match with Treger and winning and drawing
against Hoffmann. Only a loss to fourth place Michel Roger kept him
from winning the event.
Hoffmann, at 7-3 a half-point behind Epstein, was off form and spoiled
a few promising positions, especially the one he lost to Treger.
Treger won $45, Epstein $30, and Hoffmann $15. Six players competed.

JACOBS, YUDASIN MARCH TO VICTORY IN ST.JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello
Chief TD
Veteran U.S. Master Jon Jacobs had the finest result of his chess
career, tying for first with world-class GM Leonid Yudasin in the March
St. John's Masters at the Marshall Chess Club. The winners won their
first three contests and drew with each other in the last round to earn
$300 apiece.
After beating an Expert at the start, Jacobs knocked off higher-rated
Dr. Lewis Eisen and IM Alex Lenderman to earn his shot at Yudasin.
Jacobs' upset of Lenderman also won him the $45 Upset prize, assuring
him of the largest payday in this event for any untitled player in its
27-month history.
Yudasin, meanwhile, played all Masters, including his student Adam
Maltese and GM Mark Paragua, to earn his share. Maltese, Paragua, and
IM Jay Bonin all scored 3 points and won $70 each, tying for third and
the Under 2400 prize.
Junior talent Kassa Korley also had a terrific tournament, drawing with
Bonin and beating two Masters before succumbing to Paragua at the end.
Korley won the Under 2300 prize of $45.
22 players competed on the night before the annual Foxwoods congress in
Connecticut. Thanks to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and
Assistant TD Ed Frumkin for their aid. The next event in the series
will be on April 15, 2008, at 7:00 pm.

PARAGUA IS TAXMASTER OF APRIL 15 ST.JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
GM Zviad Izoria, like many Americans, has a reason to dislike April 15.
Unlike many Americans, his tax amounted to one Rook.
His final move of the evening put a Rook en prise in a likely winning
position, making Filipino GM Mark Paragua the surprise winner of the
April St. John's Masters event at the Marshall Chess Club.
Paragua's 4-0 score earned him $300. He nosed out Israeli GM Leonid
Yudasin who had drawn with Izoria in Round Three. Yudasin took home
$200 for clear second. Nobody made exactly three points, oddly enough,
so Izoria was pleasantly surprised to learn he shared third prize and
some class money with Masters Dov Gorman and Jon Jacobs and Expert Paul
Szuper. The 2.5 scorers walked off with $55 apiece.
Veteran Yevgeniy Margulis knocked off IM Jay Bonin in the first round
and got the Upset prize of $40.
Thanks to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and Assistant TD Ed
Frumkin for their aid in running this event. Sixteen entries and one
filler competed. The next event in the series will take place on May
20, 2008 at 7 PM.

PARAGUA DOMINATES MAY ST. JOHN'S MASTERS by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
GM Mark Paragua of the Phillipines captured his second consecutive St.
John's Masters first prize on May 20. Paragua won his first three
contests, the last against former US Junior champ IM Lev Milman, before
drawing with GM Alexander Stripunsky to garner the $300 first prize.
Stripunsky had drawn earlier with IM Jay Bonin. These two, along with
IM Justin Sarkar and GM Michael Rohde, comprised a four-way tie for
second and third worth $75 apiece. A fifth 3 point scorer, Adam
Maltese, walked off with the $80 Under 2400 prize.
Jon "Double-Check" Jacobs lived up to his new nickname by taking home
two prize checks for the second time this year. He tied with Leif
Pressman and Evan Rabin for the Under 2300 prize, earning the splendid
sum of $13.34, and he won the $40 prize for the biggest upset by
knocking off GM Leonid Yudasin in the first round. Jacobs nosed out
Matthew Herman in the Upset division, as Herman polished off IM Alex
Lenderman at the outset.
19 entries and one filler comprised the field, which included 4 GM's
and
4 IM's. Thanks to Dr. Frank Brady, Dr. Glenn Statile, and Assistant TD
Ed Frumkin for their usual support.

PARAGUA, BONIN CAPTURE JUNE ST. JOHN'S MASTERS
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
Philippine GM Mark Paragua and American IM Jay Bonin tuned up for this
weekend's New York International by dividing first and second prizes in
the June event in the St. John's Masters series. The winners drew their
encounter and defeated all other comers to take home $275 apiece.
Paragua defeated upset specialist Matthew Herman in the final round.
Herman had beaten IM Alex Lenderman and GM Michael Rohde in the second
and third rounds, the former victory earning him the prize of $55 for
the biggest upset. Lenderman and Rohde met in the final round, and
Lenderman's triumph earned him a tie for third and the two usual class
prizes with Herman and FM James Critelli, which amounted to $91.67 for
the trio of 3-point scorers.
21 entries and one filler competed in this event. Thanks to Dr. Frank
Brady and Assistant TD Ed Frumkin for their support. The next event in
the series will take place on Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00 pm.

HOFFMANN ROLLS IN FIFTH OF JULY G/60
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
Veteran FM Asa Hoffmann swept aside all opposition in the July 5th
Saturday G/60. He won all four of his games to capture the $75 first
prize, ahead of Sarkis Agaian and Kevin Rosenberg, who won $41 apiece
with their 3-1 scores.
Hoffmann beat Agaian in the third round, then had to face a junior from
India, Aditya Naganath, in the finale. The visitor, a half-point
behind, declined Hoffmann's draw offer, but blundered a piece in
a
difficult position later. Naganath and three others
finished in a
technical tie for third and earned $7.75 apiece. Michael Bogaty,
Guy
Rawlins, and Eugene Brayman scored two points and divided Under
1700
honors, earning $12.33 each.
Ten of the 15 entries won a prize.

HOFFMANN COMPLETES HOLIDAY SWEEP
by Nick Conticello,
Chief TD
While the "usual suspects" were slugging it out at the World Open
in
Philadelphia, FM Asa Hoffmann was enjoying his 4th of July weekend.
Hoffmann scored 4/5 to capture the $75 first prize in the July 6 Sunday
Action event at the Marshall Chess Club and complete a rare weekend
tournament sweep.
Hoffmann drew early with the dangerous junior Andrew Ryba, but knocked
off chief rival Yefim Treger in Round 4 and took a short draw with
Sarkis Agaian in the finale to lock things up. Agaian, Treger,
and
underrated newcomer Vuksan Marasevic divided second and all the class
prizes for a total of $39.67 apiece for their 3.5 scores.
Andrew Ryba, his brother Nicholas, and unrated junior Theodore Coyne
split the third prize and earned $10.33 each for their 3 point scores.
Fifteen players competed.
