TREGER EDGES FIELD IN MAY SUPER-RAPIDS
by Nick Conticello, Chief TD
Veteran master Yefim Treger needed some help from an unexpected source to capture clear first in the Marshall's May Super-Rapids.
Treger trailed front runner Leif Pressman by a half-point after making a win and a draw against IM Jay Bonin and finishing his schedule with 8.5 out of 12. Pressman was 7-3 and needed to sweep lower rated Sarathi Ray at the finish to take first. But Ray proved quite tough to beat, achieving the ending Queen against Queen in both games and relegating Pressman to a tie for second and third with Evan Rabin at 8-4. Treger won $45, Pressman and Rabin $22.50 each.
Bonin, tuning up for the upcoming US Championship, had a bad night and finished out of the money at 7-5. Ray finished sixth in the field of seven with 4-8.

GARRETT GRABS RAPIDS
Visiting Arizona FM Pieta Garrett's play in the first Rapids of 2007 was a work of art. Garrett scored 11-1 to finish four points ahead of a decent field in the tournament held on Jan. 5 at the world-famous Marshall Chess Club.
The only blemish on Garrett's record was a penultimate round loss to new member Pengfei Kan, a student from Hong Kong with a 2140 FIDE rating.
Kan could manage only a fifth place finish, behind runner-up Larry Tamarkin at 7-5, third prize winner John Burke at 6.5-5.5, and veteran Jerry Graham at 6-6. Garrett took home $25, Tamarkin $15, and Burke $10.

TREGER AND ZILBERMINTZ DOMINATE RAPIDS
The Sept. 29 Marshall Rapids was not what FM Asa Hoffmann would call a "formful" event. The top-rated veteran finished out of the money as Yefim Treger and Lev Zilbermintz cruised to victory with 7-1 scores.
Hoffmann lost three early games, to Under 2200 winner Fred Casten, to Zilbermintz, and to visiting Londoner Rajko Vujatovic. Vujatovic took clear third with a 5.5-2.5 score. Hoffmann beat Treger in the last round to permit Zilbermintz to tie for first. Treger beat Zilbermintz handily in their meeting.

HOFFMANN SWEEPS RAPIDS
On a dreary, rainy evening, Asa Hoffmann reigned supreme.
The veteran FM swept the field in the Sept. 15 Friday Rapids, winning all eight games and scarfing up the $35 first prize. Surprisingly, young Jesus Perez and John Gruska tied for second and third and each took home $17.50 with 6-2 scores, ahead of fourth place finisher Larry Tamarkin, who picked up "pizza money" (his term) of $10 for his 5-3 score. Nine players competed.

BONIN TAKES RAPIDS
The last time IM Jay Bonin played in the Rapids he struggled to a 50% score.
This time he did somewhat better.
The veteran IM and 3-time Club Champion reeled off 10 straight victories before agreeing to draw with rrunnerup Adam Maltese to capture the $32 first prize in the August 25 Rapids. Maltese had lost earlier to third prize winner FM Asa Hoffmann but won all his other games before his showdown with Bonin to assure himself of second place with 9.5-1.5, a point behind the winner. Hoffmann, in turn drew with Under 2200 cowinners Leif Pressman and Evan Rabin to score 9-2. Pressman and Rabin each scored 8-3 and accomplished the amusing feat of scoring exactly the same against each opponent! 12 players competed.

PRESSMAN, ZILBERMINTZ WIN RAPIDS
There were few surprises in the August 18 Marshall Friday Rapids. The two highest rated players, Leif Pressman and Lev Zilbermintz, tied for first with 6 points from eight games. Zilbermintz allowed only a draw into games with third-ranked Evan Rabin while Pressman could only manage a split, but Pressman swept fourth-ranked Ralph Italie while Zilbermintz blundered in a winning position and allowed a draw in two games with the veteran. The winners each received $15 for their efforts. Five players competed.

YURASHKEVICH WINS SUPER-RAPIDS
It was not as unexpected as a blizzard in August, but it was close. Somebody won a Rapids ahead of Asa Hoffmann.
The surprise victor of the August 11 Super-Rapids was Kanstantsin Yurashkevich of St. John's University, who beat Hoffmann in the final two rounds to take clear first and the $45 top prize, with a score of 11-3..
Until the end, Hoffmann had been in control, winning two from US Cadet Champion Marc Arnold and splitting with Yefim Treger. But he conceded a draw in a favorable position to Lev Zilbermintz and left the door open for Yurashkevich to catch or pass him. Hoffmann's score of 10.5-3.5 was still good for the second prize of $25, while Arnold's 10-4 was enough for the third prize of $20. Zilbermintz made 7.5-6.5 and won the Under 2200 prize of $10.

NEW FACE TAKES RAPIDS
He came, he saw, he conquered. Well, almost...
Newcomer David Apelo nearly took first place all to himself at the July 21 Rapids, but a last round loss to fellow first-timer Macauley Peterson let veteran master Yefim Treger catch him and divide first and second prizes.
The winners each scored 8-2 and took home $16 apiece.
Peterson in turn could only split with veteran Fred Casten in the final pairing, and so he finished out of the money behind Lev Zilbermintz, who won the third prize of $8. Six players competed.

HOFFMANN WINS AGAIN
The July Super-Rapids was held on Bastille Day, but there was no revolution at the Marshall Chess Club. FM Asa Hoffmann won again.
Hoffmann won his first 11 games and yielded a draw in the final game to Kanstantsin Yurashkevich to cop the first prize of $45. Yurashkevich and Yefim Treger tied for second with 8.5 points and divided the $30 second prize. Newcomer Bobby Burstein from Virginia scored 4.5 to win the Under 2000 prize of $15 in the seven player field.

UPSETS AT FRIDAY RAPIDS
It was a night of surprises at the July 7 Rapids.
Yefim Treger lost two games to visiting master Igor Vaynerman, and then, still reeling, lost two more to Lev Zilbermintz. Treger recovered to win the rest of his games, but the damage was done.
Vaynerman reeled off 8 straight wins and faced Zilbermintz in the final two rounds. Zilbermintz had yielded only a draw to Vaynerman's friend Oleg Shevelenko. The first game between the leaders was drawn by repetition, although later Vaynerman demonstrated a likely winning line. The second game found the visitor checkmated in the middle of the board in a Rook and minor piece ending early in the game, so Zilbermintz captured the first prize of $20. Vaynerman took home $12 for second, and treger salvaged $8 for third.
Six players competed.

Friday, June 23rd, 2006 Rapids!
It seems there are now three certainties in life: death, taxes, and FM Asa Hoffmann winning the Friday Rapids.
Hoffmann did it again, with yet another variation on the dramatic finish. After winning his first 10 games, he lost 0.5-1.5 to eventual runnerup Lev Zilbermintz. If Zilbermintz could win his last four games, he could finish at least equal first no matter what Hoffmann did. And Hoffmann still had to play the dangerous Yefim Treger.
But Zilbermintz could only split his matches with newly minted USCF Master Leif Pressman and Under 2000 winner Timothy Harris, while Hoffmann won both games from Treger to secure a comfortable looking two-point victory. Zilbermintz earned his second place finish by not losing any matches. Treger nosed out Pressman for third.
Prizes:
First: Asa Hoffmann $27 12.5-1.5
Second: Lev Zilbermintz $15 10.5-3.5
Third: Yefim Treger $12 10-4
Under 2000: Timothy Harris $6 6.5-7.5

Friday, June 16th, 2006 Rapids!
FM Asa Hoffmann is acquiring a flair for the dramatic. He staged a come-from-behind rally to tie Yefim Treger for first in the June 16 Friday Rapids.
Hoffmann started slowly, splitting two games with Larry Tamarkin and a visitor from Portland , Oregon named Goran Markovic. Later he gave up a draw in two games to third prize winner Lev Zilbermintz and as he squared off with Treger at the end of the tournament, Hoffmann still found himself a point and a half behind. Hoffmann won the first game with Treger, but could only draw the second and he still had yielded a half point more than Treger.
But Treger could only make 1.5 from 2 against the unheralded Markovic, who scored against everybody but swept nobody, earning the sobriquet "Mr. Split." Hoffmann and Treger each scored 11-3 to share first and second, Zilbermintz scored 10-4, and Markovic won the Under 2000 prize with 6.5-7.5. Eight players competed.
Prizes:
First-Second: FM Asa Hoffmann, Yefim Treger 11-3 $17.50 each.
Third: Lev Zilbermintz 10-4 $10
Under 2000: Goran Markovic 6.5-7.5 $5

Friday, June 2nd, 2006 Rapids!
It was a dark and stormy night, but that did not stop FM Asa Hoffmann from winning the Friday Rapids yet again.
Asa was put to the test, though, losing one of two games to Brennan Ward early on. Asa had to win virtually all of his remaining games to take first, especially the two with runner-up Larry Tamarkin. Tamarkin had conceded only a draw to third place finisher Lev Zilbermintz before the showdown between the leaders. Hoffmann beat Tamarkin twice to clinch matters. Ward finished fourth in the double round robin of 8 players.
Prizes:
First: FM Asa Hoffmann 13-1, $27
Second: Larry Tamarkin, 11.5-2.5, $15
Third: Lev Zilbermintz, 9.5-4.5, $12
Fourth: Brennan J. Ward, 9-5, $6

Youth was served in the May 26 Rapids.
The ever-young FM Asa Hoffmann cut through a strong field, scoring 11.5 points from 12 games, conceding a draw only at the end to second place finisher Evan Rabin. Teenager Leif Pressman scored 9.5 for clear third, and veteran Larry Tamarkin posted 7.5 to win the Under 2200 prize.
Visiting Londoner Rajko Vujatovic posted 6.5 but could only tie for 6th with young Andrew Ryba. Andrew's younger brother Nicholas posted a 5.5-6.5 score for clear eighth place in the field of 13.

FM Asa Hoffmann had to overcome a first round loss to unheralded Brian Watson, but gave up only one draw the rest of the way to cruise to victory in the April 28 Marshall Rapids. Summer Rapids Layoff ...

Some files found and recovered by Riley Kellogg and some office reorganization. Too late to be rated - these files will be posted above in red.

Friday April 11, 2003 Rapids
The April 11 Friday rapids tournament was well attended and exceptionally strong. Notably missed were Paul and Leif Pressman, who almost always participate.
Ilye Figler played for the first time in many months, but this did not affect his 'blitzing' abilities, as he finished clear first, = $56.00
Asa Hoffmann, played well enough for 2nd, = $30.00
Roman Dubinskiy, another rarely playing master, finished clear 3rd, = $20.00
Nelson Farber won the U-1800 prize, = $19.00
Welcome to Sarkis Agaian to his first rapids at the Marshall (that I can remember!?), And welcome back to Brennan J. Ward, who is much more than a medium size kid now!

Friday April 4, 2003 Rapids
On April 1st, we decided not to use "Fischer Retractor Moves" in the event of blunder's by the players.
This year no player had electrodes placed in their hypothalamus to help find them moves, so as there were no 'rats' playing here, everyone played 'normal' 5-minute chess, using just their own heads! - - See Chess Base news, April 1st, 2002 and 2003. www.chessbase.com
As I predicted, Dmitro Kedyk came back and won first rather easily. Asa Hoffmann was off-form, but still managed 3rd place, and Leif Pressman continued to improve week by week, winning the U-1800 prize.
Particularly interesting was his use of the 'no-losing-chances' clause in simple theoretical positions, which he used twice, when in bad time-pressure he stopped the clock, and saved precious half points. (Another Eddie Kopiecki?).
Marc Arnold is back after a long rest - He was obviously out of form, and finished out of the money - He even did poorly in after rapids bughouse chess, but I expect he will be back to his 'normal self' soon enough! -- Larry S. Tamarkin
Dmitro Kedyk, 1st = $27
Garold Braslavskiy, 2nd = $15
Asa Hoffmann, 3rd = $9
Leif Pressman, U-1800, = $9

Friday March 28, 2003 Rapids

Friday March 14, 2003 Rapids
Senior Manager, Ron Young graciously consented to cover this past Friday's rapids event, so that I could participate in this tournament after many months of inactivity - The result of finishing clear 3rd was not too bad, considering the usual ups and down of 'luck' in each. I must admit, I had a lot of fun playing in this event - Such is the attraction of the rapids, and so I will hope for other opportunities to get into it, when not directing!
Asa Hoffmann, totally dominated the event, and David Zimbeck 'got away with it' in too many games, making a bizarre king march early in the opening, leading to many instantly bad positions.
Young 'Super-Star' Dmytro Kedyk was just a little 'unlucky', to finish out of the money this time. Most of us here at the Marshall, figure that he will soon be dominating this event as well! -- Larry S. Tamarkin

Young Wei Chen gained the most rating points - 72, and Leif Pressman continued to show improvement in his play despite the slow rise in his rating, in drawing a close game with Hoffmann. Paul Pressman again won the U-1800 prize.
WBCA Rules are currently being utilized in the Friday rapids, and all players are encouraged to familiarize themselves with them before the start of play. However, no other affiliation with the WBCA is in effect, and rating are calculated with Swis-Sys 5.03 for use in the rapids of the Marshall Chess Club only.
All players please note the there is no phone entry, even though we do appreciate your calling us to let us know you are on the way. Registration officially ends at 7:25 pm, and is open only to the first 14 players. If registration is above 14 before registration ends, only then is the tournament split into two round-robin sections. Please take note of these facts & leave early on Friday! - Thank you, Larry S. Tamarkin, co-manager.

January 3, 2003(!) Friday Rapids
The first rapids of the new year had an impressive turnout of 14 players looking to start 2003 with speed!
Family members Grandmaster Michael Rohde and Danny Rohde as well as Paul and Leif Pressman participated, and in both cases at least one family member won a prize!
John C. Fernandez was very impressive in tying for first with Grandmaster Rohde. Jeremy A. Graham also had an excellent beginning of the new year, coming into focus, with 10 1/2 points for 3rd. Maybe his bughouse expertise helped his imagination leap forward in the rapids- :-)
Paul Pressman was also solid, scoring 7 points to take the U-1800 prize. All participants were members of the Marshall.
Young Chen Wei gained 56 rating points! Welcome back, Associate member Steve Zolotow, who rejoined the club that night. And welcome back to Brennan J. Ward, who has had a busy school schedule, and has recently been absent from the rapids.
Happy New Year everybody! I hope it will be a good one & we'll all go through it healthily together!

September 14, 2002 Impromptu Saturday Rapids!
Marshall Chess Club president Douglas Bellizzi graciously minded the office so that manager on duty Larry S. Tamarkin could participate in this one-off special event.

Asa Hoffman had a rare out-of-form result, scoring 7 points, tied for 3rd with Gregory Cesar (His first speed tournament at the Marshall) = $5 each.

Danny Rohde, Grandmaster Michael Rohde's 13 year-old son played in his first blitz event here at the Marshall, after the days earlier event. He played with great enthusiam and we expect to see a lot more of him in future blitz events!

June 28, 2002 Rapids
The Marshall's June 28th rapids had a very good turnout of 17 players in the two sections, with quite a few not-yet members. Likely the upcoming World Open tournament had something to do with this, as speed chess is one of the most excellent ways to test your chess preparation, especially with openings. As always refreshments were served. Thanks to club VP Jeremy A. Graham, apples and bananas were again served this week, contributing to the healthy quality of the fare.
In the "A" section Artist Peter S Aravena & 'Chess Wizard', Asa Hoffmann tied for 1st with 6.5 pts., winning $27.50 each.
Raul Marguez had perhaps the worst performance of his speed chess career, only scoring 2 1/2 pts., out of the money for the first time in our event.
Visiting Master Noureddine Ziane picked up clear 3rd, worth $20.00.
Rising star, 15 yr. old Brennan J. Ward, scored 4 pts to clinch the U-2100 prize of $15.00.
Brennan is playing in the U-2000 section of the World Open. Here is one of the comments expressed about Brennan's chances there; "I hope Brennan doesn't do anything stupid. Maybe He'll win his section" - A club officer. I think so too. -- Larry S. Tamarkin

June 21, 2002 Rapids
The June 21, 2002 rapids was a relatively small turnout with 8 players. Many of our regular participants of the rapids probably stayed home to prepare for the next days tournament, the "I-Still-Love-New-York" Open!, run by the Chess Center of NY in the New Yorker Hotel.
The number of players we did have this week was helped by the participation of several players who are students of Chess Teacher Miguel Iniguez.
We did serve cookies, but it was too hot for coffee. Also, Vice president Jeremy A. Graham provided healthy Banana's and Apples for the chess players enjoyment.
As expected, Asa Hoffmann & Yefim Treger tied for 1st/2nd with 6.5 pts., winning $20.00 each.
Senior citizen Gabor Schnitzler finished in a respectable 3rd position with 5 pts., winning the U-1700 prize of $15.00 -- Larry S. Tamarkin

June 7, 2002 Rapids
6/7/2002

The June 7th rapids had an excellent turnout of 21 players in 2 sections. In fact many of our events are having good turnouts of late; Is it World Open preparation, or is chess just getting more popular during the Spring/Summer months?
Not surprisingly, 1st in the "A" section was
Raul Marquez = $30.00
2nd was won by Ilya Figler, winning $25.00
3rd was taken by Yefim Treger = $20.00
The U-2000 prize was won by Brennen Ward & Marc T. Arnold, each taking home $7.50

May 31, 2002 Rapids
5/31/2002

Unfortunately the May 17 & 24 rapids charts are missing, so cannot be rated at this time. Further because of an unanticipated problem using swis-sys I had to delete the 2 lowest scoring players, Leif Pressman (1 pt.), and Richard Tuhrim (1/2 pt.). We will now forever restrict total attendance in 1 section to 14 players - Another reason to efforce our late fee structure. I appologize to all affected players - I hope to insure prompt and complete reporting of our rapids events in the future.

Welcome to new member Master David Pruess, who tied for first with Asa Hoffman this week with 13 1/2 pts each, $27.50 each.
Sam Barsky finished clear 2nd with 12 pts. = $20.00
U-2000 was won by Lev Zilbermints (who will go back over 2000 after tonight's event), = $10
U-1800 was won by Kubera Naganathan with 5 pts. =$10.00.
Congratulations to Alex Cellum who gained 109 BLITZ rating points this week!

Congratulations to young Marshall chess club member Fabiano Caruana - He scored 8 1/2 out of 9, and won the Gold medal for the United States in the Pan-American Championships in Argentina, and will be awarded the FIDE Master title at the next FIDE congress!

Players who compete at our club can often be assured of playing future 'legend's in our events!

May 10, 2002 Rapids
5/10/2002

The May 10th rapids was reasonably well-attended with 12 paid players. Sam Barsky had to withdraw, but graciously contributed his entry-fee to increase the prize fund.

1st went to returning regular, Asa Hoffmann.
2nd to Yefim Treger, who drew a near winning game against Marc T. Arnold. The question of 'no losing chances' came up, and I decided in this particular case to rule it such (after a play-off in the position). In future situations of this type I'll likely just rule it one way or another, without a play-off of the game. As things went, Yefim didn't demonstrate a clear winning plan and so I had to call it a draw.
3rd went to Mike Hehir, and the U-1800 prize was shared by new member Naganathan Kubera and Paul Pressman.

Asa Hoffman, 1st - $25.00
Yefim Treger, 2nd - $20.00

A relatively low turnout for the rapids ... one section. This time the players were all members of the Marshall. Three of our 'regulars' were here at the club, evidently 'too tired' to participate in the tournament.

April 19, 2002 Rapids
4/19/2002

The April 19, 2002 rapids was a 'relatively' small affair with only 10 players. In general the rapids is well-attended (even this one), and the low entry-fee with return of all as prizes, is enjoyed by all of the players. There are some players who would like to see a larger entry fee and prize distribution. I've been told that this has been tried in the past, and that it has usually had the effect of players 'fading off' and the rapids ultimately dying out. We live in difficult times - Many don't have a lot of 'spare change', even for a movie, much less a chess tournament and so we try to attend to our members needs in this.
Ultimately this is a question that the tournament committee is continuing to look into, as the views of the majority of chess competitors is always being considered. For now, the rapids is most liked just the way it is - With a very low entry fee (for the Members of the club).
Though the prizes are often rather low, most of the players like it just the way it is, as they can get a lot of chess 'action' in a relatively short space of time, compete for prizes (and even class prizes), without worrying about the expense (like they do for a tournament like the World Open), of the event leaving a serious hole in their pocket. That being said, if any one reading this would like to be a sponsor of the rapids, you are certainly welcome to contribute money or things like chess books to the prize fund to make the event even more exciting & enjoyable for all the players.
As always coffee & cookies were served and all the entries were returned as prizes. Welcome! new member David Zimbeck originally from Idaho, who is certainly master strength in blitz.
Results: Asa Hoffmann and David Zimbeck, 1st/2nd = $17.50 each. The U-1800 prize went to Paul Pressman and Alexander Cellum = $2.50 each.

New Member David Zimbeck came clear 3rd with 10 pts. = $15.00

And the U-1700 prize was won by young talent Richard Tuhrim, whose 5 pts was worth $15.0 -- Larry S. Tamarkin

April 5, 2002 Rapids
4/5/2002

The April 5, 2002 rapids had a very good turnout of 20 players - So 2 sections.
"A" Section:
Raul Marquez won his key game against Asa Hoffmann and so finished clear 1st with 8 1/2 pts. = $25.00
Asa still managed a very respectable 2nd place with 7 1/2 pts. = $15
Finishing with the U-2100 prize was the always dangerous Lev Zilbermintz with 5 1/2 pts. = $15.00

"B" Section:
Chris William avoided defeat, and so finished 1st with 8 pts. = $25.00
Marc T. Arnold in probably his last outing in the "B" section was 2nd with 7 1/2 pts = $15.00

Asa Hoffmann who was suffering a shoulder injury suffered a (very) rare setback, and finished out of the money. The following day Asa had one of the best results of his year, winning clear 1st in the days G/60 open, which had a very nice turnout, and so rewarded prizes above that which it was based on. Congratulations Asa!
